Il Palazzo del Ghiaccio di Milano è uno splendido edificio in stile Liberty in zona Porta Vittoria voluto dal Conte Alberto Bonacossa - più volte campione nazionale di pattinaggio artistico - e inaugurato il 28 dicembre 1923. Con i suoi 1800 metri quadrati di pista, il Palazzo era, all’epoca, la principale pista ghiaccio coperta d’Europa e una delle più grandi al mondo, mentre l’imponente copertura in ferro, legno e vetro costituiva un felice incontro di virtuosismo architettonico e rigore ingegneristico. Duramente colpito dai bombardamenti della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, che hanno gravemente danneggiato le sfarzose decorazioni dell’interno, il Palazzo del Ghiaccio ha riaperto al pubblico dopo il conflitto, rimanendo attivo fino al 2002.
In ottant’anni di attività, il Palazzo ha ospitato molti dei più importanti appuntamenti agonistici milanesi, non solo su ghiaccio, ma anche di pugilato, scherma e pallacanestro; è stato inoltre sede di attività sportive amatoriali, eventi di intrattenimento, sfilate di moda e proiezioni cinematografiche. Memorabili anche i concerti, tra cui il debutto assoluto di Adriano Celentano al “Festival Italiano del Rock and Roll” del
1957, la “Sei giorni della Canzone” con Mina nel 1959 e le esibizioni di celebri voci come quelle di Giorgio
Gaber, Enzo Jannacci e Luigi Tenco.
L’importante restauro, curato dall’agenzia di architettura 5+1 AA e terminato nel 2007, ha recuperato le funzioni preesistenti dell’edificio, riqualificando e razionalizzando gli spazi dal punto di vista architettonico.
È stata mantenuta la possibilità di destinare il parterre alla sua storica vocazione di pista da pattinaggio; al tempo stesso, il Palazzo ha acquistato una nuova modularità che lo rende uno spazio polifunzionale adatto ad accogliere la più ampia tipologia di eventi: spettacoli, concerti, sfilate di moda, serate di gala, mostre, convegni, fiere e meeting aziendali.
Con oltre 2400 metri quadrati di parterre, il Palazzo del Ghiaccio si contraddistingue per una superficie unica nel centro di Milano. Alla grande sala principale si affiancano, su più livelli, altri spazi di varia metratura che si possono utilizzare insieme al parterre per gli allestimenti più complessi, oppure in modo indipendente, secondo le esigenze dei singoli eventi.
Alla struttura si accede tramite un ampio foyer, all’interno del quale sono stati ricavati ambienti per l’accoglienza e il guardaroba, mentre la suggestiva sala Piranesi, dalle pareti rosse, si affaccia sulla pista attraverso una parete in cristallo trasparente.
Anche gli altri due spazi, che si sviluppano su livelli diversi, affacciano sul parterre: la sala Vittoria, al piano rialzato, è un ampio open space di 400 metri quadrati che si presta a diventare, di volta in volta, area riservata, area congressi o ristorante, mentre la Balconata, di uguale metratura, si trova al primo piano.
Un piano seminterrato è disponibile per i camerini e altre esigenze di servizio.
La grande terrazza dell’ultimo piano, particolarmente adatta a cocktail e feste all’aperto, affaccia sulla “vecchia Milano” della stazione di Porta Vittoria.
La struttura è completamente oscurabile e dotata di lampade bubble dal design sofisticato e di faretti da terra, declinabili in diverse tonalità di colore, che esaltano la particolare architettura ad arcate ferree della copertura. Sfilate di moda, serate di gala, mostre, incontri culturali, meeting aziendali, concerti e spettacoli teatrali trovano nel Palazzo del Ghiaccio una cornice pienamente funzionale che coniuga fascino e stile all’avanguardia.

The Palazzo del Ghiaccio in Milan is a splendid art nouveau building in the Porta Vittoria area. It was commissioned by Count Alberto Bonacossa – the multiple national figure-skating champion – and was opened on the 28th December 1923. With its ice-rink of 1800 square metres this was, at the time, the largest covered ice-rink in Europe and one of the largest in the world. The imposing roofing in iron, wood and glass represented a successful combination of architectural virtuosity and engineering precision. During the air raids of the Second World War the opulent decorations inside the building were seriously damaged, but it opened to the public after the end of the war and was in use until 2002.
In eighty years the Palazzo del Ghiaccio hosted many of the most important Milanese sporting events: this did not only include skating, as it was also used for boxing, fencing and basketball; in addition, the venue featured amateur sporting events, performances, fashion shows and film projections. It was, moreover, the venue for memorable concerts, including the debut of Adriano Celentano in the 1957 edition of the “Italian Festival of Rock and Roll” and other notable Italian festivals featuring the likes of Mina, Giorgio Gaber, Enzo Jannacci and Luigi Tenco.
The major refurbishment, which was undertaken by the architecture firm 5+1 AA, and completed in 2007, restored the building’s previous functions, while requalifying and rationalising the space in architectural terms. The parterre may still be employed in its traditional capacity as an ice-rink, but the building has acquired a new modularity which makes it a polyfunctional space that is perfectly suited for hosting a wide range of events: performances, concerts, fashion shows, gala dinners, exhibitions, conferences, fairs and corporate meetings.
With a parterre of more than 2400 square metres, the Palazzo del Ghiaccio provides a unique offer in the centre of Milan. As well as the large main hall it features a variety of other spaces of different sizes over a number of floors. These can either be used together for more complex set-ups or in an independent manner, depending on the requirements of individual events. Access to the structure takes place through a large foyer, which includes reception and cloakroom areas, while the striking Piranesi hall, with its red walls, overlooks the ice-rink through a transparent glass wall.
The other two spaces, which develop over different levels, also overlook the parterre: the Vittoria hall, on the raised ground floor, is a large open plan space of 400 square metres, which may be used, depending on requirements, as a reserved area, congress space or restaurant, while the Balcony, of the same size, is on the first floor. A basement level is available for changing rooms and other service requirements.
The large terrace on the top floor overlooks the historic area surrounding the Porta Vittoria station and is particularly suited for cocktail receptions and open air parties. The structure may be completely blacked-out and is equipped with bubble lamps with a sophisticated design and ground spotlights that can project light of different colours that enhances the architectural features and iron arches of the roofing.
Fashion shows, gala dinners, exhibitions, cultural appointments, corporate meetings, concerts and theatrical events can all find within the Palazzo del Ghiaccio a fully functional setting which combines charm and avant-garde style.
