"The inspiration or concept is a simple one about human elephant conflict: when we look at her we see the landscape, the paddy fields, the distant hills, the sun, the moon and the birds but we cannot see the elephant, she has vanished. This can be interpreted in a number of ways including: the land (elephant land) has been encroached so far by human agriculture needs that there are no elephants left. and/ or it could be seen as the wild elephant sneaking into the farmers land to steal the bananas (which she is eating) but as so often they are not seen (despite their size) as they are surprisingly quiet and stealthy until it is too late and the damage is done. The concept is partly inspired by Haruki Murakami's The Elephant Vanishes. But mainly from talks with Dr Josh about the issues of HEC that I worked on for Think Elephants International educational animations. Despite the serious idea I wanted her to be appealing, so the colours are highly saturated, with lots of greens, which through my time teaching visual art and media here in Thailand, gets very positive responses from Thai People, with associations of rice paddys and cool freshness. A feeling I associated with especially when driving through the paddy fields on my way to work. Often there are flocks of the big grey cranes and so they are present in the image. The clouds are reminiscent of the style of the Buddha stories painted in Ayutthaya's many Wats, but with added texture. And the toe nails are painted gold with gold leaf from the square temple gold prayer offerings. This was a conscious decision again to appeal to the Thai audiences' association with the rituals.
