A ‘jack’ is a naval flag flown from the bow of a sailing vessel. The Union Jack flag illustrates the union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and dates since 1801. The flag combines aspects of three national flags: the red cross of St George of the Kingdom of England, the white saltire of St Andrew for Scotland and the red saltire of St Patrick to represent Ireland.
